We are soon approaching Thanksgiving 2023! Which will take place on Thursday 23rd November 2023. It is an annual holiday, celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the US. The celebration focuses on gratitude and sharing and marks the beginning of the holiday season, leading up to both Christmas and New Year. The day itself is usually centred around a traditional family meal and family activities such as crafting or watching football. It was declared a public holiday by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 but it all began in 1621 when the American settlers gave thanks for their first harvest, by holding a three day festival, also attended by Native Americans such as Massasoit and his men. Today many Native Americans do not celebrate Thanksgiving but observe the day as a National Day of mourning to acknowledge their ancestors sacrifices as a result of colonisation.
